The journey to the cloud: lessons learned from working with major organizations

Once, operating in the cloud was pioneering and innovative, but various factors have combined to make the transition, or at least some workloads, inevitable. If you work in technology for a major organization, you’ve probably been involved in the planning, initiation, or execution of a cloud strategy.

The cloud is a critical part of most enterprises’ IT blueprint and competitive strategy. Despite the challenges, cloud use continues to increase at a steady pace. Gartner forecast that by 2022, 90% of organizations would be using cloud services. That number has likely fast-tracked as the COVID-19 pandemic has forced many organizations to further accelerate their cloud adoption.

And like most things worth doing, reaching this cloud-first state isn’t going to be easy. A report from Velostrata and Dimensional Research found that 73% of cloud migration projects took a year or more longer to complete than expected, and 55% reported going over budget, largely due to improper planning.

Cutover has worked with major organizations undergoing cloud and data center migrations. We’ve seen firsthand the challenges major enterprises face when undergoing a cloud migration program and have learned a lot from them about dealing with the scale, complexity, and risk involved.

To help your organization on its cloud migration journey, we’ve put together six of the main things we’ve learned from working alongside AWS and our clients during cloud migrations in our white paper: The journey to the cloud: lessons learned from working with major organizations

What you will learn from the white paper:

  • Cloud first is the goal, but many organizations are nowhere near there yet
  • Preparation for cloud migration starts earlier than you think
  • To succeed, you need to understand what success looks like
  • One of the biggest challenges is complexity
  • Organizations are having to balance speed and safety
  • There needs to be a way to bring order to the chaos

To learn more about what we’ve learned from working with major organizations migrating to the cloud and how Cutover can help you, download the white paper.
