Building an effective cloud disaster recovery (DR) plan requires a shift in mindset from traditional data center failover to a workload-centric approach. Rather than managing a single data center, organizations must now account for multiple services distributed across various regions and availability zones (AZs).

A successful plan begins with a foundation of cloud architecture knowledge, including an understanding of cloud service provider (CSP) services and the specific regulatory requirements, such as DORA or MAS BCM, that your organization must satisfy.

Before you begin building your cloud disaster recovery plan, it’s important to have some foundational knowledge about:

  • The cloud architecture that underpins the services you provide to customers
  • The differences between traditional (data center) and cloud disaster recovery which includes region, availability zones (AZs), cloud service provider (CSP) services, etc.
  • How to make disaster recovery tests as realistic as possible in the cloud
  • What an effective communications strategy looks like
  • What post-recovery metrics are required to learn from your mistakes and successes
  • The regulatory requirements and data privacy concerns you may face
  • Treating plans as living documents that are constantly being used and improved, not static plans buried in a file somewhere

Our in-house cloud resilience experts have shared 10 detailed tips for how to build and run the most effective cloud disaster recovery procedures.
